Dear Meowmeow, Yesterday, my teammates and I started to learn Spanish. We had lunch together after the English teaching class and went to the Dahsian Library. We reserved a discussion room and we sat in a circle to start our learning journey. Our learning process began with the alphabets. We listened to a cute alphabetic song and we soon picked up the pronunciation of all the alphabets. Next, we started to learn about some basic rules in Spanish. For example, the stress of a word should be in the second syllable from the back. Unlike English, Spanish has its own way to extinguish the stress. What’s more, all the vocabulary in Spanish has two forms, male and female. When the subject is a female (no matter a person or an animal), the verb has to end with an “a.” A lot of South American and Spanish female’s names end with an “a, “too. That is really interesting because here in Taiwan, our names don’t end with a certain letter. After we learnt the basic rules, we started to learn t...

Dear Meowmeow, I would like to share something else about my learning experiences. When I was studying in elementary school, my English was the best among all the subjects. Therefore, I was pretty confident of my English ability and I never said no to my classmates when they asked me some questions in English. When I was in fifth grade, our homeroom teacher even asked me to stay in the classroom to help her translate her foreign friend’s messages instead of going to English class. I didn’t feel weird at that time, but after I told my mom about it, she burst into rage and scolded my teacher. I felt sorry for her even until today. When I turned twelve, I happened to get the chance to join in the English speech contest. I was so excited that I practiced with my mom literally every day. I even called my uncle at midnight in order to revise my script. It was undoubted that I made effort to perfect my speech and I really wanted to do a great job in the contest. However, a girl in my ...

Dear Meowmeow, Last week, our department held an activity called the Night of English. We’ve prepared for it for almost two months. Some people practiced dancing and singing and some other people played the instruments. There was one tradition of this activity. It must contain a drama performed in English and it had to be formal and interesting at the same time. Since this was a tradition, we made every effort to look for the freshmen who were interested in acting and directing. Luckily, we found a girl who had the experience of being a director, and she was willing to recruit classmates around her. When the first script of her play was finished, she handed it in and asked for some advice from us. The plot was based on a tragedy and it even had a sad ending. Due to the lack of entertainment, we had no choice but to ask her to revise the whole play. She obviously looked a bit down at that time, but we just kept encouraging her and told her she had already done a great job. What’...

Dear Meowmeow, It was my birthday last Saturday! I really had a great time during the whole week. On my birthday, there was also a big event called Baochung Tea Festival. We had prepared for it for two weeks and we all wore the same clothes that day. The purpose of the event was to give some senior high school students or their parents some advice and instructions about our department. Many of my classmates played the role of instructors, while I was dancing on the stage as the performers. Those people were even trained to introduce our courses in English since there might be some foreigners. When I was preparing to go up the stage, all of my friends started to sing happy birthday song to me. That was really a wonderful experience. When the festival finally came to an end, my friends and I went to a restaurant near Taipei 101 and had a nice dinner together. I even bought myself a birthday gift secretly because I didn’t want to put pressure on my friends. All I wanted was everyo...

Dear Meowmeow, Yesterday was our turn to go up the stage and give a presentation about how we learn Spanish together. We introduced an application called Learn Spanish, which contains some basic elements of the language. The whole app presents a complete Spanish program. It is divided into twenty-six courses and each of them holds different content. In the first class, we could learn how to pronounce all the alphabets in Spanish. Before this, I thought the alphabets in Spanish are the same as those in English. However, there are actually quite some differences. For example, in Spanish, there are an alphabet read “che” and another one read “elle.” These two are the features in Spanish. What’s more, although some Spanish alphabets may seem the same as those in English, the pronunciation could be totally distinctive. For instance, we have to flip our tongues in order to pronounce “r” in Spanish. This requirement indeed troubled many of my teammates since they don’t have the abilit...

Dear Meowmeow, Yesterday, we listened to a lecture in class. My first impression of the speaker was that he was really smart. I know that it might sound shallow, but he impressed everyone in the class in a rather unique way. The topic of his speech was stunning. He stated that he was able to speak many languages. At first, I thought he was bragging and exaggerated a lot. He talked about how he learned those languages and under what circumstances did he get in touch with so many of them. I myself only know how to speak Chinese, English, and a little bit Spanish. I can’t even speak Taiwanese though I’m a Taiwanese. Some of my classmates laughed at me because of that. I am a student studying in a college of languages; however, I still consider picking up a language to be something really difficult. The speaker told us that he had never gone to a cram school to learn those languages. That surprised all of us even more. He claimed that he weaved the learning process into life and he...

Dear Meowmeow, Yesterday was our last English teaching class. That made me feel pretty sad because I really enjoyed the atmosphere in this class where all my classmates could teach and learn together. We’ve done so many things in this class. We listened to a lecture, had a role-playing game, and most importantly, we learned the way to teach and be taught. Also, I think that the teaching process actually enhanced the bond between my teammates and I. We hung out more after the discussion of the teaching and learning. We went to the library together in order to study Spanish and laughed at one another when someone had a weird or wrong pronunciation. Those trivial things turned out to be the most memorable things. At the very beginning of the class, I was a little bit worried because there seemed to be a lot of work to do in this class and I already registered many other courses. Looking at the syllabus, I felt a lot of stress and doubted if I could make it to the end. Thanks to Pr...
